MAYBE YOU’VE HEARD OF THE WHOLE30 CRAZE THAT HASN’T DIED DOWN SINCE IT WAS INTRODUCED IN 2009.
You may even be wondering what it is and why the heck anyone would choose to do it!
Well, my friend, you’ve come to the right place!
In a nutshell, the Whole30 is a strict elimination diet in which any and all foods that could potentially cause inflammation in your body are eliminated from your diet for 30 days. It is basically very strict Paleo, meaning that you eat a lot of sustainably-sourced meats and seafood, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and nuts/seeds.
When you’re on the Whole30, you completely eliminate:
- Added sugar (both real and artificial)
- Carageenan, MSG, and added sulfates
- Paleo baked goods or “treats”
The reason that people start the Whole30 is typically because they are experiencing an unfavorable “symptom” that they are hoping to fix. Some of these may include:
- Weight gain
- Brain fog
- Low energy
- Trouble sleeping
- Chronic aches and pains (that cannot be explained by overuse or injury)
- Stomach pains or bloating
- Skin problems
- Sugar cravings
- Irregular menstrual cycles or infertility
Eliminating potentially inflammatory foods gives your body a chance to reset and allows any inflammation to heal and recover. After 30 days, you are then instructed to reintroduce certain foods (from the food listed above) back into your diet slowly to see if they have any negative effects on your body. If no problems arise, some choose to add that food back into their diet. If the same problems as before do creep back up, people are then able to know exactly what food causes inflammation in their body and steer clear in the future.

So Why Am I Doing the Whole30?
If you’ve read Part 3 of my health and wellness journey, you know that I am all about balance. I’m not one to completely omit a certain food group from my life indefinitely. If you are that kind of person, well…more power to you because that’s downright impressive! Personally, I stay away from inflammatory foods most of the time, but if a special occasion arises and I decide that I want to partake in some “naughty” foods, you better believe I won’t be feeling guilty about it!
So why, you might ask, would I consider committing to an elimination diet such as the Whole30?
